Jordan deployment volunteer reflections

As we begin our last day delivering aid we are sitting together in the back of the truck we seem to have been living in most of this journey. At the end of the day we shall set off on our journey home.

Home. We are blessed to not only to have homes but also security. Many of the people we have met do not have these two basic necessities. The impact of this has caused many problems however this did not dampen their attitude. They smiled and welcomed us into their lives; showing us what love is.

On this deployment we have met Iraqi, Somalian, Sudanese, Syrian and Yemeni refugees and also poverty-stricken Jordanians. The harsh racism that exists against the Somalian and Sudanese was an upsetting experience. To see it first hand in such conditions inspired me to 'be the change' even more. It’s not about raising money but also raising awareness.

One of the most difficult experienced I will keep with me for a long time is when I met two beautiful Somalian boys aged 7 and 9 whilst delivering food parcels. I was told about their time in Jordan and the horrific experiences they had gone through after fleeing the war. I looked at them with sadness and as we delivered the food parcel to their home it began to sink in. The extent of damage this will do to these young innocent boys broke my heart. I thought of my nephews, brothers, students, myself as a woman and all the children who face such difficulties. So many emotions ran through me.

May God protect and elevate all those who are suffering across the world. The innocent children who only wish to go to school or play in the street. The kids who wish to become nurses, doctors, teachers and engineers. I pray they have every success in all their endeavours. Please keep them in your prayers, especially the two young boys.
