Everyone says no matter what you do, you won't really get far; I say hope ignites something further.

As I was on my way to lunch one day, I saw a homeless man crying frantically. I did not stop. I was scared. But I prepared myself to stop on my way back, I found some courage and spoke.

I asked him what was wrong. He cried… found his speech and said "I can't do this anymore".
He had been trying all morning to gather enough funds to allow him a hostel - it hadn't gone very well. I could hear the genuineness in his voice, he was ready to go. To rid his pain.

We spoke for a while, and although I normally avoid handing out cash- I did this time.
Shear smile on his face, he thanked me and gave me the number of the hostel as he knew of my concern.

I saw him a week later, smile on his face. He claimed he was still at the hostel and things were looking up. Relieved, I carried on.

I saw him again yesterday, a few months later.
Smile of recognition, we spoke again. And then he said, "They've given me a flat now, so thank you."

And that is how one suicidal, homeless man found shelter. He has hope, and he has ignited my hope further.

It is indeed the smallest of actions that have the largest of impacts. That one moment of hope can change a life.

You might find it hard to believe, but a genuine smile you give someone, or five minutes of your time will brighten their galaxies.
