Homeless project volunteer reflections

Homeless project volunteer reflections

  • 06 Jul, 2018

It will soon be a year since we started doing our weekly homeless feeds. On the whole people are quite supportive of our work but occasionally we hear the odd comment along the lines of "oh they're just a bunch of junkies anyway why are you bothering". That’s disheartening to hear because it's not true. Although there may be people on the streets who have substance misuse issues (whether this was the case before they ended up on the streets or as a result of being on the streets), the majority of people we meet are just like you and I; people who have just fallen on hard times. Meet Kevin, whose story just proves that point.

We met a man called Kevin World today on Hope for Humanity's homeless drive. Kevin has been on the streets for 15 months and is hoping to get his accommodation in the next few days. When asked what he has learnt from being on the streets, he said the biggest thing he has learnt is to be compassionate. He once earned £1000 a week, had his own business, a mortgage, a car, and he would ignorantly walk past a homeless person if he ever saw one. He would never do that now, and he would never go back to that job and lifestyle because it makes you forget about others. He has learnt the value of money and is grateful to the people that have helped and supported him. It was an inspiration meeting Kev, he may have been sat on the streets, no roof over his head, but he was content and at peace. He did, what we're taught to do. To live like a traveller. To wake every morning and not expect the evening, to sleep every evening and not expect the morning.

Kevin was full of wisdom and gratitude and made today's homeless feed a brighter one.
